Chris Horwedel: What was it that attracted you to
McNeese State?
Quinten Lawrence: Winning.
I mean that's the first thing, I knew they were a winning
program. Coming from my high school we use to win a lot
and I wanted to be a part of a winning program.
Chris Horwedel: You were a good basketball
player when you were younger, did you consider playing in
college?
Quinten Lawrence: Yes I
did, but as the years went through in high school I kind of
realized I was a football player. I love football, it
just put much stronger and overtook basketball. I
still love basketball. I still love it, I can't play
as much as I use to but I still love the game of basketball.
Chris Horwedel: Your bio says you played point guard.
Would you say you were a pass first point guard or a scoring
guard?
Quinten Lawrence: I
think I was a scoring guard. I was supposed to play
the 2 or the 3. I was a scoring point guard, I mean I
could have dished it, don't get me wrong.
Chris Horwedel: I gotcha. If you have the ball,
why give it up if you can just put it in the basket, right?
Quinten Lawrence: Ha ha,
yes sir.
Chris Horwedel: Which current NFL wide receiver would
you say you most closely resemble?
Quinten Lawrence: Hmm...
You know I get the question a lot. Closely
resemble.... I'm pretty small, big play receiver I think.
I don't know, good question.
Chris Horwedel: Best case scenario: Quinten Lawrence
turns into what player at the next level?
Quinten Lawrence: Steve
Smith.
Chris Horwedel: Only
minus the punching teammates?
Quinten Lawrence: That's
the first thing I was thinking about. Minus the
off-the-field activities that some of these guys get into.
I like the way they play on the field, I can't judge them
off the field but I like the way they play on field.
Guys like Randy Moss and the deep ball, that's the kind of
thing I'd like to be able to do when I get there.
Chris Horwedel: What's something that would surprise
people about Quinten Lawrence?
Quinten Lawrence: I'm a
pretty strong person as far as adversity. I feel like
I can overcome a lot of things. If anything happens in
the future I can overcome it because I've overcome a lot of
bad things. I don't like for people to look down on me
(like awww... and feel bad for me). Without it I
wouldn't be the person I am today.
Chris Horwedel: Considering the amount of money
generated by college sports team, do you think that student
athletes should be paid?
Quinten Lawrence: No,
because at the same time we are students first. We
just have the privilege and blessing to play football.
Chris Horwedel: Before the snap, what's the first
thing you're looking for in the opposing defense?
Quinten Lawrence: I look
at the coverages. First of all, I look at my
cornerback in the eye and I can tell if he's ready or not
and I go from there.
Chris Horwedel: Just to
let him know you're there?
Quinten Lawrence: Yeah
just to let him know I'm there. I go to the line to
let him know that every play I'm coming. I never let
him know I'm tired.
Chris Horwedel: What're your thoughts on the NCAA's
celebration rule?
Quinten Lawrence: That's
funny, after the things that have been happening lately, I
don't know. I just feel like how they call that
penalty got a little out of hand. But I mean, you
don't need to be celebrating. I'm going to assume that
the guys scoring touchdowns in college have been scoring
touchdowns in high school and middle school, so we should
know how to act when we get in the endzone.
Chris Horwedel: Let's say that tomorrow you're named
NCAA president, the celebration rule aside, what's the first
rule you'd change?
Quinten Lawrence: Umm...
I don't know, ha ha. Wearing visors I guess, any color
visor. Or wearing gloves.
Chris Horwedel: Who is the toughest opposing player
you gone up against in your time in college?
Quinten Lawrence: The
Jenkins guy playing for South Florida, he went in the first
round.
Chris Horwedel: If you could add any one current
college football player to the McNeese State roster today,
who would it be and why?
Quinten Lawrence: Any
college player?!? Good question... James Laurinaitis.
Chris Horwedel: Why's
that?
Quinten Lawrence: He's a
beast. I mean I can't say a quarterback because I love
my quarterback and I can't replace him. Definitely
James Laurinaitis, get that ball back for me.
Chris Horwedel: How do you feel you stack up against
the top receivers in the country?
Quinten Lawrence: I
don't play in the SEC or the ACC so nobody really knows what
I can do, unless I get invited to an All-Star game.
But I think I stack up well. My offense is not a
passing offense, we're a run first, pass second team.
I do what I can when the ball comes my way, I do my best to
make a play. I mean who are some of the really good
guys? Like Crabtree or Harvin, if I was on that team I
could play with those guys and run with those guys and catch
with those guys. I don't see where they're better than
me.
Chris Horwedel: If you're in that Texas Tech offense,
how many catches are you getting?
Quinten Lawrence: I
think I'd catch 100 balls, every year.
Chris Horwedel: If you could pick a pro team to play
for, who would it be?
Quinten Lawrence: The
Dallas Cowboys. Since I was a youngster all I knew was
number twenty-two and number eighty-eight, number eight,
it's all I knew.
Chris Horwedel:
Everybody's a Cowboys fan.
Quinten Lawrence: Oh
trust me, I'm not a bandwagon jumper. I've been loving
them even when they were down down down. It even
brought tears to my eyes when they lose a game. Like
last year in the playoffs, it brought tears to my eyes.
Chris
Horwedel:
What's more important to you in the beginning of your
NFL career: Being on a great team or being able to play
early on?
Quinten Lawrence: Of
course I would like to play, but I would rather win than
anything. It's like me going to McNeese, I could
have gone to junior college and played first. I'd
rather win, it brings a smile to my face, and my
teammates and the fans.
Chris Horwedel: What's your current
height/weight/40?
Quinten Lawrence:
6'1"... I think I'm 6'1". I'm about 183 and I'm
just going to say a nice time, I'll go with 4.3.
Chris Horwedel: 4.3 flat or somewhere in the
4.3's?
Quinten Lawrence:
4.3 flat, although I've run faster than that.
Chris Horwedel: Which one quality do you consider
your greatest strength?
Quinten Lawrence:
Determination.
Chris Horwedel: Which area of your game do you
feel needs a bit of work?
Quinten Lawrence:
Concentration. Looking the ball in.
Chris Horwedel: Which one of your games, more
than any other, sticks out in your mind?
Quinten Lawrence:
Probably the game against North Carolina this year.
It's the first game that coming in I'm not even really
thinking about the ball and how much it comes to me, I'm
just weighing my game on how good I block and the other
things that I'm doing. Like if I'm a decoy, how
good I run that route and just doing that so somebody
else can make the catch. I feel like I did a good
job that game.
Chris Horwedel: And
you guys came awfully close to pulling out that victory.
Quinten Lawrence:
Yeah that was disappointing because I really feel like
we were supposed to win that game. It was just
that one guy that beat us though, he's a hell of a
football player.
Chris Horwedel:
You're talking about Brandon Tate?
Quinten Lawrence:
Yeah he pretty much beat us by himself.
Chris Horwedel: Lets talk get to the important stuff.
What's the last movie you've seen, cd you bought and video
game that you played?
Quinten Lawrence: Last
video game was Madden. I think I'd win Madden Nation
if I was on there. The last movie I've seen was "The
Family That Preys", the Tyler Perry movie. Last CD
I've listened to was Lil Wayne.
Chris Horwedel: What's the best advice you've been
given?
Quinten Lawrence: My
grandmother, before she died, said to never give up no
matter what. Stay strong no matter what and that's
what I've done. I've overcome a lot of stuff and every
time I want to (quit), I think of her words and here I am
today. I think I'm doing good for myself.
